The digital release date for Piece by Piece has been revealed after the critically acclaimed Pharrell Williams biopic didn’t take off in theaters. Williams’ biopic tells the story of his life using LEGOs, emphasizing what inspired him to become a musician alongside the many twists and turns his career took along the way. While Piece by Piece received positive reviews, many praising the charming portrayal of the “Happy” singer’s life, it has struggled at the box office. As of writing, the film has made $8.9 million against a $16 million budget after two weeks in theaters.
Now, Universal Pictures has announced that Piece by Piece will be available to buy and rent digitally beginning tomorrow, October 29, 2024, despite the movie still playing theatrically. In addition, the movie will be available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray starting December 17, featuring the bonus program “Building Blocks,” starring Williams and director Morgan Neville speaking about the concept of the movie. This early decision for a home release means the unique biopic could find renewed success, even if it’s not on the big screen.
What Piece By Piece’s Quick Digital Release Means For The LEGO Biopic
It Wasn’t As Theatrically Successful As Hoped
Despite the cast of Piece by Piece having plenty of musicians and other important figures involved within its story, the movie seemingly didn’t have a big enough draw for audiences to go see it in theaters. While this may have had something to do with its unique presentation, the success of Williams’ music coupled with Neville’s directing still make it an engaging structure for the film. This means that, despite its lack of success in theaters, the movie could still manage to gravitate toward a new audience when it arrives for digital purchase.
The movie’s presentation also helps it stand out from other musical biopics, with the LEGO formatting allowing the movie to approach Williams’ life in more creative ways than a typical live-action portrayal would. Although it may not rank among the best LEGO movies for everyone, given previous releases have been about fictional stories with a potentially wider appeal, it’s still an interesting approach to the biopic genre. This means those who are open to seeing a different type of biopic could buy or rent the film, in hopes of engaging with a unique experience.
